How to identify 1st Edition Pokémon cards

Check the left side of the card, just under the picture: 1st Edition cards have a small black "Edition 1" stamp in that spot. 1st Edition was the first print run of the early Wizards of the Coast sets, from Base Set in 1999 to Neo Destiny in 2002, and these cards sell for much more than the Unlimited prints that came later.

Which sets had a 1st Edition run

YearSets
1999Base Set, Jungle, Fossil
2000Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge
2000–2002Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, Neo Destiny

Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection never had a 1st Edition print, and the stamp disappeared from English cards when the Wizards of the Coast era ended.

The three Base Set printings

  • 1st Edition: has the stamp and no shadow next to the art box. The rarest printing.
  • Shadowless: no stamp, and no shadow along the right side of the art box. An early print that is scarcer than Unlimited.
  • Unlimited: the main print run, with a shadow on the art box and no stamp.

What they are worth

Value depends on the card and, most of all, its grade. A 1st Edition common can sell for a few dollars, while holos such as Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur range from thousands to hundreds of thousands. In December 2025, a PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions. See the most expensive Pokémon cards and our vintage guide for more.

First prints in Japan

Japanese cards follow different rules. Some Japanese sets from the XY and Sun & Moon eras carry a small "1st Edition" mark on the first print run, and the first printing of the Japanese Base Set has no rarity symbol at all. These "No Rarity" cards are collected in their own right.

Common questions

How can I tell if my card is 1st Edition?

Look for the black "Edition 1" stamp on the left, directly below the artwork.

Are all 1st Edition cards valuable?

No. Many commons and uncommons are worth little; the money is in holos and popular Pokémon in good condition.
