The rarest Pokémon cards in the world

Ask most collectors and they will say the rarest Pokémon card is the Pikachu Illustrator, with only 39 copies, all awarded as contest prizes in 1998. Tournament trophy cards like the No. 1 Trainer are also contenders, since only a handful of champions received them. None of the cards on this list came from a booster pack.

Rarity and price are different things. Rarity is about how many copies exist; price is about how many people want one. Most cards here are both rare and valuable, but some obscure promos are scarcer than famous chase cards and still sell for less.

Gold Star cards

From 2004 to 2007, in the EX era, the hardest card to pull was a Gold Star: a shiny-colored Pokémon marked with a gold star next to its name, found roughly once in every several booster boxes. The Charizard, Rayquaza, Umbreon and Espeon Gold Stars are the most wanted, and PSA 10 copies have sold for six figures and more in 2026. Today's gold Hyper Rares and shiny cards carry on that tradition.

The hardest cards to pull from current sets

In sets you can still open, the rarest cards sit at the top of each set's rarity ladder:

  • Special Illustration Rares (SAR in Japan). Full alternate artwork; finding one specific card can take several boxes.
  • Hyper Rares and Mega Hyper Rares. The gold cards, and the highest tier in the Mega Evolution series.
  • Master Ball pattern reverse holos. In Japanese 151 and in Prismatic Evolutions, they are far scarcer than the Poké Ball versions.
